We haven't been to the Chicago Discovery Center for a couple years (DH is afraid my son will want to buy out the store if we go now - why he thinks this is different from any time we hit the LEGO store, I don't know), but I recall at that time it had a nice representation of downtown Chicago, a walk-through rainforest exhibit where older kids were given a list of things to find, a factory tour similar to LEGOLAND, a movie theater (I believe there was only one movie, playing, however), one ride-through type ride (Kindgoms theme, if I recall correctly), a build area and a big playground type area with oversized soft bricks and car building (similar to what's outside of the Downtown Disney store), as well as the store. They have special events on occasion - there was a SW weekend earlier this year, for example with characters (which unfortunately I failed to convince DH to attend).
It's significantly smaller than LEGOLAND, but it's cute. And those free child ticket coupons (with purchase of an adult ticket) they give away periodically are usually good for the Discovery Centers as well as LEGOLAND, which is a plus.
