The chrome does look nice, but if it's going to flake, I think I'd have to go with the regular Jedi handle.

Does anyone remember when baseplates were like regular bricks underneath? (i.e. you could build and connect plates/bricks to the bottom) or is this just in my imagination??

Megabloks , I would say is a LEGO rival. Sometimes, they have licensed characters not available in LEGO. They had Cars (in the duplo size), HALO, Dora, Diego, etc.

It would be interesting to give a set of pieces and then ask people to build something (like the iron chef suggestion on a bigger scale)... or do it like chopped where there are certain secret ingredients that must be used, but then you can also add whatever else you want to it).
