LEGO City Toy Fair Report
LEGO City Toy Fair Report
As one of the most popular perennial original themes, the 2015 offerings in the LEGO City theme are quite robust, comprised of two exploration-based subthemes - being referred to as "Space Port", which somewhat revisits the subtheme from 2011, and "Deep Sea Explorers" and one larger set in the same vein as 2013's 60026 "Town Square". All sets featured here are slated for release in August 2015.
City - Space Port
The Space Port subtheme features four sets centered around real-world space exploration. Including two different variations on the Space Shuttle theme, a training jet with transport truck, and a smaller "starter" set.

I find it strange that we get a futron spaceman, but a knight from the newest castle.

Green Futuron guy!!!!! However, my OCD is screaming a bit. The pattern is a little different. Looks like there is some sort of button pattern at the bottom of the torso.

Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I'd really love for LEGO to explain their insane pricing. There is the Agents boat with 1200 pieces for $100, one of the NinjaGo's dragons is $40 for 575 pieces, the two mechs is $60 for over 700 pieces.Mantisking wrote:Lego City, the new Lego Star Wars.
Yet a 555 piece space shuttle is $120?! That's completely insane. The diving boat is the same? Are they out of their minds?
$190 for City Square, I rather buy the detective office. Just completely insane and for no reason.
Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
Yeah, I'll have to have a City Square but not without a 20%-30% off sale. City sets shouldn't hit AFOL-only price ranges.
Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I know piece count is the holy grail of pricing but you also have to consider that many of these sets have gigantic pieces. The shuttle is made up of enormous pieces and the front of the expensive boat looks like one enormous piece. Obviously that's going to cost more than a 1x1 brick, which will necessarily bump up the cost of the set and make the piece count look a little off.
I love the Town Square. So many vehicles! $190 is definitely steep for that style of set, I'd much prefer to drop it on a heavily detailed Creator set however.

Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
^ That's a good point. The Deep Sea Exploration Vessel's hull is actually one complete piece, since it floats.

Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I understand that there are a lot of big pieces, but City the last few years have been outrageous even without the big pieces.
A 500 piece space shuttle no matter what should never cost $120. A few big pieces or not. Five years ago we got this set... http://brickset.com/sets/10213-1/Shuttle-Adventure Even if you count for inflation and the fact the big pieces count as more there is no way the new shuttle should be over $90.
It's why I have ditched City and now stick to Friends. Better pieces and piece counts. And worst is with the overprice City sets there is rarely any new faces / torsos. I guess we need to spend $200 (Which I rather buy a train) in order to get those.

Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
The city square does not impress me at all. I rather spend my money on 10244 Fairground mixer which I am still on the edge.
Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I agree, that is just a ridiculous price for the shuttle. 60078 uses the same nose piece and it's $25 for 155 pieces. I think $70 would be a fair price for that set.Brick & Blue wrote:I understand that there are a lot of big pieces, but City the last few years have been outrageous even without the big pieces.

Does the deep sea submarine remind anyone else of Atlantis?

Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
Man that City Square is neat. Expensive, though.
Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I don't like LEGO City in general so I only buy myself the LEGO City polybags. I prefer sets with smaller pieces.
Re: LEGO City Toy Fair Report
I was really looking forward to 60080 Space Port because I missed the 10213 Shuttle Adventure, but $120 (which will likely be $150 Canadian) is way too expensive. I can understand how larger molds might drive up the price, but that price just feels obscene. Now I doubly regret missing out on 10213.
I thought the City Square looked interesting, but at that price I'd rather go for the Parisian Restaurant or the other modular buildings. I'm sure if they split this up into smaller sets they would sell better.
