Post by Toys N Bricks » Mon Sep 14, 2015 4:10 pm

The 2015 Bricktober LEGO exclusive sets have been revealed! This year, Bricktober will have a focus on different mini buildings. There will be a hotel, a train station, a bakery and also a Toys R Us store. The promotional Toys R Us poster below is taken from HKLUG. From September 18 to October 15, Toys R Us stores in Hong Kong will be offering a free Bricktober set when you spend $800 HKD or more on LEGO. A similar promotion should be happening at Toys R Us stores around the world as well. Thanks to Patrick for writing in.

My local TRU still has a bunch of last years sets on the shelf for $19.99 and they are just collecting dust. Hope these do a bit better.
Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

I like them, and I liked last year's, but I still don't own any. Can't see $20 a piece.

I'm interested and I have last year's. It was a hassle to get them seeing as you have to spend over a certain amount to get each and $20 for such a small set doesn't make sense for me. I don't think is want to do it again this year. Would anyone be willing to trade a set of these for last year's?

Why do they release the mini-modulars as a TRU exclusive in which you must make a large purchase to get? These are my favorite sets besides mini SW, and it could be difficult to get multiple. I know that my TRU still has 3 of the 4 from last year's still around. The theater sold out the first week to never be seen again. And since a bunch of them are sitting around, they might order less than last time.

Enough of my rant. These sets look great. The train station is very interesting. I want to add a mile of track.

I agree that they are far too much of a hassle. Couldn't one easily use their own parts and bricklink what they don't have? I do enjoy mini-builds though. Mini Modulars 10230 is ranked very high on my all time favorite sets to build.

For an experiment to this theory, I made a part out wanted list for the Bricktober Mini Theater of last year. (You can buy this set for about $22 + shipping from a USA seller.) I did search by Shop: only found one store that had all the pieces (52 unique pieces). I added the exact quantity of each item to cart, and it was over $43 (plus shipping).

I'm sure there are some sets that could be cheaper if bought per piece, but from experience, it is double the cost. It makes sense for people running shops: they have to be making a profit.

There is one trans-yellow piece (used) from the Blacktron base that is going for $30. You can buy the entire set for roughly $110 (used). I have tried just buying all the rare parts from that set as parts, and the cost was $100. So buying whole sets has always been the best choice in my experience.

Good point. I didn't factor in shipping from multiple vendors to get all parts needed (and prices if all found with same vendor). IF one is lucky they will have most of the parts needed and would only have to purchase a few (or change the colors in the case of these sets). I suppose some of us buy sets to collect and leave most assembled and on display (or store in original packaging) while others buy sets, build them and then take them apart for parts. Very few sets that I've purchased over the years are still assembled. Most of my sets are sorted into my parts collection for moc building. For those that take apart most sets and sort for future new builds they would have much more luck recreating these sets without the need to search for parts on bricklink (especially if they are ok with substituting colors occassionally).

I like your experiment of purchasing ALL needed parts for a set VS purchasing complete set. I guess I was pointing out that although I somewhat like the sets there didn't seem to be that many hard to find or unique parts (excluding the printed parts). Sorry its been a long work day (forgive me for rambling) :-D
