Obviously they don't realize walmart/target/meijer is selling it for $15

City of Atlantis (7985) is marked up to $79.99 and Deep sea raider (7984) is marked up to $34.99.

Guess 'tis the season for TRU to screw the average consumer.

remember the TRU truck (7848) going up at this time last year?

tru has been consistently marking up best sellers around thanksgiving and christmas, and this year is no different. just be smart around the deals...you can still find some good ones. otherwise, just get them from B&N using the 40% coupon and maybe even consider paying membership for another 10% off if you buy enough from there. ;-)

I remember that as I bought it last August on sale (full price was $39.99, I think) and couldn't believe it went up to $49.99 and stayed at that price!

I lucked out last year with that one. They had the TRU truck with the price under it of $34.99. It rang up wrong (of course) but they had to sell it to me anyway. It was even better that it was during a B2GO Free sale. Walked out with 3 for $70 + tax.

Maybe it's just my local store but TRU has been really good with standing behind their posted prices.

I think for their business model they have to jack the prices up now to convince the casual Lego buyer that when they have a "sale" msrp is a deal. The funny thing though is that TRU will most likely sell everything on the shelves either way.

Wow, first wave markups appears to be roughly a 20% markup above MSRP already. (and this is just the beginning)

Even more sets are insanely overpriced now. AT-AT is $143 (RRP $110), Whitecap Bay is $97 (RRP $80), Hogwarts train is $102 (RRP $80) and more...

These markups are for unsuspecting parents buying gifts for children.

I think it's also to accommodate all of their BOGO "sales". At the marked up prices, BOGO brings them to just about MSRP, and tricks people who don't know better into thinking they saved 25% when it was really closer to 5-10%, less if they weren't similarly priced items.

Yes, this too. This is one thing I hate about TRU.

If you don't like it, report them to your state's department of consumer protection (the name will differ in each state). I'm fairly certain that last week TRU hiked the price on some items the same day they advertised a BOGO sale, which violates consumer protection laws in most jurisdictions. As I recall, Kohls got in big trouble for that, advertising items on sale when the items never sold at the supposed regular retail price. This is the exact same thing. If enough people complain, maybe the States can put a stop to this practice at TRU.

Everything is now 40% marked up. Quidditch Match is 90% markup.

Quidditch Match $37.99
Hogwarts Express $109.99
Hagrid's Hut $54.99

That's $3 more than Canadian MSRP. I think we have a winner!

But it's a really good set...only kidding. When I went to TRU I would say 3/4 of all the shelves of Lego were cleared. I think TRU won this round and will continue along this route for holiday pricing.
