Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Since it wasn't marked as clearance I'll post this here.
While in Houston visiting customers found POTC Whitecap Bay at Target by Deer Park mall in Humble. The shelf sticker said $19.98 so I scanned one of the two they had and sure enough! Even though my son got one for Christmas I figured at 75% off I couldn't pass it up! There was one still left. I did a quick visual of the other shelf stickers but they were all full price. As soon as I can figure out how to post the pic from my phone I will add.

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Of all places to go , I tried my luck at Goodwill today .
I found 2504 Spinjutsu Dojo (373pcs, $49msrp) priced at $15. Although I'm not much of a Ninjago fan, I thought it was a fair price to pay for mocfodder.
I was only somewhat satisfied, and so I gambled once more moving on to a 2nd GW location. BINGO. JACKPOT. HOMERUN. TOUCHDOWN!!!
8078 Portal of Atlantis (1007pcs, $99msrp) priced at 34 (wanted this one the most since i missed my chance with it at Target)
7327 Scorpion Pyramid (792pcs, $99msrp) also priced at 34
3065 Olivia's Tree House (191pcs, $19msrp) priced at 5
msrp: ~ $270
i paid: ~$90 with tax
Savings: over $170

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Through craiglist in the ontario, canada area I bought 18 SW sets for $445.
I actually took the risk and asked the seller to ship so the price included shipping.
I spent about $23 to buy missing parts to complete some of the sets. None of them had boxes but instruction manuals were included.
Here are the sets
6211 - Imperial Star Destroyer
10174 - Imperial AT-ST UCS
10134 - Y-Wing Attack Starfighter UCS
4483 - AT AT Walker
7261 - Clone Turbo Tank
7259 - ARC - 170 Starfighter
7260 - Wookie Catamaran
4478 - Geonosian Fighter
4501 - Mos Eisley Cantina
4500 - Rebel Snowspeeder (complete turret and rebel soldier)
4500 - Rebel Snowspeeder (complete no turret and rebel soldier)
sw minis (falcon, gunship, mtt, …)
sw minis (at te, sith, sd, imp shuttle)
7250 - Clone Scout Walker
7263 - Tie Fighter
7252 - Droid Tri-Fighter
7256 - Jedi Starfighter & Vulture Droid (stickers applied)
7256 - Jedi Starfighter & Vulture Droid (complete, no stickers)
total value based on US msrp $830 plus taxes, based on cdn msrp $1200 plus taxes
with the exception of 7250, 4500x2 and 4478, I sold each of the above individually for a total of $1245 through ebay, bricklink, kijiji, craigslist between early dec and feb.
Took alot of effort to complete the sets but making about $800 made it worthwhile in the end and I got to build some sets I had in my collection but never opened them.
interesting outcome is that the total made ended just slightly over canadian msrp which means its definitely harder to make money reselling lego in canada on average compared to the US sellers because of the higher msrp back when these sets were released. The prices I listed for these were generally at the lowest of the range that were available from ebay and bricklink sales.

Thx for sharing your buy and sell experience in CND craigslist mkt. It seems open box item value (except modular set) could barely reach MSRP at most.ricefields wrote: interesting outcome is that the total made ended just slightly over canadian msrp which means its definitely harder to make money reselling lego in canada on average compared to the US sellers because of the higher msrp back when these sets were released. Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Just to avoid any misleading information about the individual sets here is a detail list. sorry the formatting is going to make this hard to read without fixed column formatting.
Decent return if bought in US but not in canada. As you can see only 4 used sets sold above the cdn msrp. The best performer was mos eisley cantina in terms of percentage increase. Worst investment was the 7259 and 10174. I am sure higher prices have been paid out before but selling out of canada is a disadvantage to start with and most times cdn sellers end up receiving the low range of market prices. And we also have to cover higher shipping costs.
sold price, Cdn retail, US retail, paid
$140 $150 $100 $70 6211 - Imperial Star Destroyer
$75 $110 $80 $35 10174 - Imperial AT-ST UCS
$210 $180 $120 $75 10134 - Y-Wing Attack Starfighter UCS
$215* $150 $100 $67 4483 - AT AT Walker - traded for a misb 8297 off road technic which sold for $215 - if I did not trade, the 4483 would have probably sold for at most $130
$125 $135 $90 $68 7261 - Clone Turbo Tank
$35 $60 $40 $15 7259 - ARC - 170 Starfighter
$80 $70 $50 $33 7260 - Wookie Catamaran
$30 $40 $30 $15 4478 - Geonosian Fighter
$95 $40 $30 $30 4501 - Mos Eisley Cantina
$25 $30 $20 $10 4500 - Rebel Snowspeeder (complete turret and rebel soldier)
$15 $30 $20 $5 4500 - Rebel Snowspeeder (complete no turret and rebel soldier)
$40 $40 $32 $5 sw minis (falcon, gunship, mtt, …)
$25 $40 $32 $5 sw minis (at te, sith, sd, imp shuttle)
$10 $15 $10 $5 7250 - Clone Scout Walker
$30 $30 $20 $5 7263 - Tie Fighter
$10 $20 $15 $5 7252 - Droid Tri-Fighter
$45 $30 $20 $10 7256 - Jedi Starfighter & Vulture Droid (stickers applied)
$35 $30 $20 $10 7256 - Jedi Starfighter & Vulture Droid (complete, no stickers)
$1,240 $1,200 $829 $468 totals

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
I picked up a small PaB cup last night. Managed to fit in 320 pieces, most of which I'll be using in some fashion shortly. After using a $5.00 credit I ended up paying $2.91 after tax. Which comes out to $0.009 per piece.
Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Any interesting pieces in Natick? I still need to fill two Holiday PAB boxes, but haven't seen anything great in Braintree.Mantisking wrote:I picked up a small PaB cup last night. I picked up a bunch of these, these, and these, plus a ton of Trans-Clear cheese slopes.atmail35 wrote:Any interesting pieces in Natick? I still need to fill two Holiday PAB boxes, but haven't seen anything great in Braintree.

At Barnes and Nobles I got a 8098 Clone Turbo Tank for $45 (including shipping and taxes), which is really great compared to my Canadian price of $160! :D They just made a mistake on mine :P
Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Decided to check Craigslist here in Vegas for some Legos and scored! The seller had the box opened to check if everything was in there. I personally inspected it to make sure everything was there. Sure enough, 21 poly bags 2 instruction booklets and sails all there with box! I paid less than $130. The set was 10210 Imperial Flagship.

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
In a local Walmart they had a bunch of "Black Pearls" #4184. They mush have really over bought them because they had them on sale at $75.00 for a long time and didnt seem to sell many.
I was in there today and they had them on clearance at $50.00 each so I purchased 22 of them to part out on BrickLink in our store.
The minifigs put in our store at the lowest offered price is going to pay for everything so all the parts will be basically free.

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
Wow, that's $1100 + taxes worth of Lego in one shot.
I'm so jealous!
I can't imagine what the Mrs would say if I tried that. Of course if you are going to be making 2x in the end, it kinda sells itself :)
Wish my store would put them on sale, they never even hit $75 here :(

Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
To me buying 22 of a set just to resell it seems like an ****** thing to do.

Sounds like good business to me, I would keep 2 for myself though, 1 to build and keep and the other to store away unopened.Brick & Blue wrote:To me buying 22 of a set just to resell it seems like an ****** thing to do.
Re: Steal of a Deal / Recent LEGO Purchases
I have to agree there. Business is business. Someone would eventually end up with these, why not someone who is at least going to make them available to other Lego fans? If he hadn not purchsed them, who would? Maybe they would all just end up as salvage or even just shuffled off to another location somewhere else. Although I woud probably not parted out all of them, this buyer/reseller sounds like they have enough experience with reselling to know a good moneymaker when they see one and I would not get in the way of that. We are still, afterall, a capitalist society.nick91884 wrote:Sounds like good business to me, I would keep 2 for myself though, 1 to build and keep and the other to store away unopened.Brick & Blue wrote:To me buying 22 of a set just to resell it seems like an ****** thing to do.

To me hearing such comments is offensive. He's making a living in a perfectly legitmate way. I have no problem buying lego on clearances. You obviously feel its unfair, well suck it up. Life's not fair.
