[FAQ] Barnes and Noble (B&M and .com)

Post by atmail35 » Fri Aug 03, 2012 6:17 pm

Several members have asked for a FAQ thread on Barnes and Noble. Please read the information first and if you still have questions, please ask them below.

Feel free to post additional relevant FAQs and answers here and I will update.

TnB Coupon Master Thread: http://www.toysnbricks.com/forums/viewt ... =67&t=6103 Please post any coupon finds in the coupon thread.

B&N PAID MEMBERSHIP:
1) Costs $25 per year
2) Members get 10% off in-store only. On-line you get free express shipping for any sized order. So if you buy $250 of merchandise in-store you will make your $25 back and the rest of your purchases at 10% off will be “profit”.
3) Typically 20% off coupons are for members and 15% off for non-members.
4) Almost all Lego is exempted (online only) from these coupons. The items that are exempt from coupons online say: “Note: This item does not qualify for coupons or promotional discounts unless expressly stated.”
5) Generally you can get 10% off w/ your membership on LEGO items and also apply coupons IN-STORE.
6) Members do not get 10% off online, but do get free shipping on any amount ordered (no minimum).
7) Members get the member 10% discount in the store, then the coupon is on top of that (the coupon discount applies to the already discounted price). Always make sure to hand the employee your membership card first.

Barnes and Noble Kids’ Club
1) This is a FREE membership.
2) Upon signing up you receive a 30% off coupon good for one full-priced toy.
3) You will earn $5 for every $100 in “qualifying kids’ purchases”. Basically that is toys, games and kids’ books.
4) “Rewards” are issued the month after you reach $100. They are valid on-line or in-store and expire after one month.
5) The MAXIMUM is $20 in rewards per year so once you hit $400 in purchases you will not get additional $5 rewards.
6) You are supposed to receive your 30% off coupon via e-mail after signing up. It has been reported that it takes about 12 hours to receive your e-mailed coupon (thanks Forum Member theflavor for this info).
7) 30% off kids’ club coupon does not work on-line, you may present it in-store or call customer service and put in an order over the phone.
8) The 30% kids’ club coupon code is a ONE TIME use only (do not post a link to your coupon!)
9) B&N Customer Service has stated that it can take up to 72 hours for your Kid's Club membership to become active. (Thanks Forum Member theflavor for this info)

Detailed info here about signing up: https://kids.barnesandnoble.com/kidsclub/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Shipping:

1) Members receive free expedited shipping.
2) Non-members get free shipping for purchases over $25
3) There is a "pick-up" in-store option.

International Shipping FAQs

Post by atmail35 » Fri Aug 03, 2012 6:17 pm

Shipping Rates (FREE Shipping for United States on orders above $25)

We would like to emphasize that this is an extremely good deal for people living outside of the United States as Barnes & Nobles has very reasonable international shipping rates. Listed below are the shipping rates for worldwide. What makes it even better is that the rates are still the same regardless of how big the item is. So the bigger the item, the better the deal!
  • International: First Item $12.98, Additional Items $5.49 each
  • Canada: First Item $6.48, Additional Items $2.49 each
Customs/Brokerage/Taxes

There are no brokerage fees. For Canada, Barnes & Nobles will charge you 5% GST as taxes during the checkout process. You do not need to pay any additional fees when your item arrives. This means if you live in a high tax province like Newfoundland (15.5%) or Ontario (13%), you actually save on tax!

I didn't see it in the fine print of the coupon and I wasn't sure but will the coupons work on clearance items? If hypothetically found a Sith infiltrator at 30% off clearance and I was a member would I net roughly 60% off the set with the 20% off coupon and the automatic 10% for being a member?

You still need to see if the item says "Note: This item does not qualify for coupons or promotional discounts unless expressly stated.” and that will tell you whether you can use it on-line. In-store it may be YMMV. I have not tried a coupon on a clearanced (red tagged) item before in-store.

Give it a try and report back, please.

Ack! This is why I'm undecided on the membership. The deals are pretty sweet if this is the case, but to me it's all hypothetical discounts at this point.

I think this should make its way to the top of this sticky as well. Unfortunately only valid for US.

If you US buyers have not been convinced to pay for a membership, then how about signing up for the bn mastercard as well; you get another 5% cash back on your purchases made using card, you also earn $25 gift card upon applying, and then recieve $25 gift cards when you earn sufficient points.

I really cannot see why even a moderate buyer won't make their money back. This offer allows a buyer to quadruple dip (including credit card cash back, membership discount, coupon code discount, and kids club $5 rewards). It used to be quintuple dip when bn offered cash back rewards from ebates, etc. and sixtuple when they used to allow cash back on both gift cards and merchandise!

Here's an example of the nested discount

$100 lego set
$85 (after 15% off coupon)
$76.50 (after 10% off membership)
$71.50 (after kids club $5 reward)
$67.68 (after applying 5% credit card cash back off 76.50)
net 33.3% off
Note: the last two do not discount your taxes paid on $76.50

I have been trying to find a way to get this card from canada but short of using a relative's address and having US identification, its not possible but if any canadian has...I want in! please pm me. thanks.

Yes, that scenario does work- in fact, did it myself the other day. Found the Darth maul set for 30% off in store, - 10% member discount -20% off coupon, walked out with it for $36 total, which includes Crook County sales tax!

Thank you for the information! I signed up for the Barnes and Nobles credit card too which adds another 5% discount to purchases made with it and a free 25.00 Barnes and Nobles gift card comes after your first purchase. In a roundabout way I'll get a free membership though I'm leaning towards just signing up for a trial period starting October to take me through the holidays.

I will not waste my time trying to buy Lego from bn.com. After several days they just cancel your order. I even placed an order for the minecraft and that just got cancelled too, even though it's in stock! Btw this isn't what I originally tried to purchase, as everything was just randomly cancelled. Not sure what type of business they are trying to operate.

Just used my B&N Kids club 30% on the EV3 at my local store. I also got the BN membership as it was almost free (cost me .50) as it gave me $35 off (10% Disc) and them my 30% off the rest...Total discount approx $130 and know I have the BN for 1 year..Good deal.

are you from US or Canada our outside north america? I am from Canada and never got my orders cancelled (shipped to Canada or US) but have heard many international buyers get their orders cancelled especially when bought at discount - seems like bn does not want to pass on good deals to international buyers (...except Canada)!

at least your store carried it, I have not seen the EV3 (or even when mindstorm nxt 2, when it was around) in the two bn stores nearest me (in Buffalo) and in the Detroit area. was it located in the lego section or elsewhere in the store?

So wait, if I sign up for that kids club thing and get a 30% off coupon, it only works in store?
Will I get weird looks if I use it?
