Amazon.fr Lego 10211 Super Star Destroyer - 319.99 Eur

Post by bulwark » Fri May 04, 2012 10:38 am

I guess with the Lego S&H sale, this may have gone unnoticed, or it may not even be as good of a deal as I thought. But amazon.fr is selling the Super Star Destroyer for 319.99 Eur but it will ship in 3-5 weeks.

Since I'm in Canada I get the vat "discount", so it worked out to be:

267.55 Eur for the SSD
18.22 for shipping
285.77 Eur total or $371 CAD using a 1 CAD = 1.3 Eur

For Canadians and Americans you may get taxed by customs so keep that in mind.

Make sure amazon.fr is the retailer. I was actually going to post this earlier in the morning but noticed that the price had gone up and was being sold by a third party retailer on amazon. I failed to look on the right hand side where it list the other sellers.

Did anyone end up ordering the SSD and if so, what was your final costs after taxes. Trying to determine if worth it. Thanks

I got mine. Ordered two of them and neither of them were taxed. According to my CC statement it was $378 CAD all in.

nice! who was the delivery company? I went the route of buying off the US shop@home site during the lego 20% off sale to get my ssd because I could not bear the possibility of taxes/duties through this method, but it appears this was a great choice. Anyone else escaped the taxes?

thanks, so there's definitely mutliple cases of lego buys fromm amazon.fr that were not charged duties/taxes when dhl is used. I wish we knew who the carrier is before making the decision to buy. I was hoping for dhl for the tower bridge I ordered but it came by UPS so that's an automatic hit for taxes.

It's a hit and miss. I am in Ontario as well. When the delivery agent is Canada Post (in other words DHL is the shipping agent in the source country), it's about 1/3 of parcels that are taxed at 13% - a couple of them are taxed at 5% as some of the CBSA agents probably assume "Hmm... amazon, eh? Must be a book!" and then tax it at 5% only (as it's only the 5% for books, magazines, etc.).

For high value items, and bigger boxes the risk might be a little higher - again, it's a hit and miss.

And yes, UPS will always (!) be taxed. I am lovin their $10.00 'bond fee'. It's amazing how they come up with all those surcharges and taxes... admirable business sense!

I was actually quite surprised I didn't get taxed myself. I order two SSDs, they shipped on different days, and they aren't exactly small or light packages.

I don't mind the $10 fee that UPS charges. While I rather not pay it, it isn't much more than what CBSA charges if you do get taxes and it sure beats the fee they'd charge to ship something across the US border by ground. I wonder why they charge so much more to do the paperwork across the US/CAN border vs overseas.

the complaints agains ups is not just from amazon.fr shipments where luckily they only charge $10 on top of the taxes. from my perspective it generally applies to most other situations where you import and ups is the carrier. for example I bought a 10020 santa fe train for $210 on ebay. The us seller shipped it using UPS which was $30 then I got charged $67 in total fees and taxes on top of that! The train now hits the $300 mark which I don't think I ever be able to unload for that amount (after i enjoyed it).

From what I know, as long as it's not a UPS ground service you should be safe from the exorbitant fees you hear in UPS horror stories. I don't think it has anything to do with US/Can, just that people think they can use the 'cheaper' ground option to ship to Canada.
