LEGO Brick Friday 2013 FREE $10 Gift Card Expiration Date

Post by semajnollissor » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:23 pm

I got my Black Friday order from the online store today with the $10 gift card.

It turns out the gift card is only valid through the end of the year [12/31/2013]. I didn't recall seeing that as a condition, but to be honest I could have easily missed that caveat.

One month hardly seems like enough time to me - two or three would have been more reasonable.

No, I don't think you missed that, I didn't see it either. As soon as I read this post I immediately ran and opened mine. Sure enough, only good through the end of this month. That stinks. I don't need anymore LEGO this Christmas. Glad I only have two "alleged" GC.

I didn't notice these conditions either. I purposely spent almost twice what I had originally planned because I justified doing so because of the $10 card that I thought I could save for future use. After reading your post I realized that I had to place another LEGO purchase or lose the $10. I hope my family have LEGO on their Christmas list :)

I did read the expiration date somewhere (some forum) before the actual BF started. Expirations and the fact that you have to make extra purchases to cash VIP points are the reasons why I don't place much value on these promos as opposed to a straight discount over RRP on Amazon for example.

Plenty of time to use. Hard to not find Lego a person wouldn't want to buy at a discount.

My Black Friday order was taking a long time to ship, so I called lego to see what was up. They said they were having major flooding near there warehouse in MS. I asked the customer service woman if they were going to extend the use of the gift cards since they could only be used until the 31st and they were not arriving very quickly. She checked with a supervisor who said no but she said she could give me a 4 day extension on the gift card. She gave me a code to use that it extends it by 4 days (I guess they felt that is how long the shipment was delayed by) but you can only use it over the phone to order, the website and in store are not capable of accepting it.

That was exactly my plan, to buy the Parisian cafe on January 1st and apply the gift card and points towards it. Seems simple enough, ordering only the one item over the phone.

I was planning to get the $10 gift card until I saw the terms. If did state the expiry date if you click on the gift card.

Wow, that seems really short.

Was the expiration date advertised anywhere up front?

Also: VIP points don't expire, do they?

As another member here said, this is why I end up preferring straight up discounts from places like Amazon or Walmart. No catches, and you generally get better savings. I recently looked at all my purchases from Lego (in store and S&H) and kept wondering why the total seemed 5x lower than it should be, then I realized all those other purchases were from other retailers and Bricklink with better deals. I guess I don't like paying full retail price

Yes, I was surprised to see the expiration date yesterday too. Also, very cool snow effect on the website!

Hmm, I don't think gift cards can legally expire in California at least not this type which can be used at only one retailer.

Crap like this makes me not want to shop at the Lego Store. I can only imagine how it will make unknowing customers feel when they try to use it and find out it has expired.

I believe that even in California, promotional gift cards can expire. If you buy a gift card, it will never expire. This, however, was a promotion, and they can put an expiration date on it.

Shady, sucks, etc. and ultimately detrimental to the relationship with the customer. Saving a few bucks seems to be taking priority over that lately.

So I found this in the FAQ at S@H

"You may use a LEGO Gift Card or e-Gift Card in combination with a valid credit card if your purchase exceeds your Gift Card or e-Gift Card amount .You may use up to 7 LEGO Gift Cards on a single order, or up to 7 LEGO e-Gift Cards on a single order, but not LEGO Gift Cards and e-Gift Cards in combination toward a single order."

Couldn't you use the expiring GC to buy a regular, non-expiring GC?

LOL, GuaranteedUnity your solution is simple and brilliant! But maybe the system does have a check to avoid that, or maybe they let you do it but charge you shipping for the card.

They do expire. It's the end of the following year. I bought something September of 2012 and the points expire Dec 31st of this year.

They sent an email in Septmeber for me.
