Nearly $10k retail into only 4 sets... I'm no financial adviser, but you may want to consider diversifying your investments so that if one set turns into a dog, it doesn't drag the rest down with it.

Personally, I would have LOVED to have seen that pile. And the look on the UPS driver's face!

And we all wonder why Toys R Us actively works to exclude these sets from BOGO offers...emazers wrote:Well The UPS Guy Showed up with 23 Boxes From Toys R US, Buy one get one have Price.

To each their own. If you got the funds to do some major purchasing like that, more power to you. Storage is a PITA too. Every "investor" has their own strategies that work best for them. The fault is not with the buyers, but with the suppliers. The more DS's and Shuttles that are bought up, the more that will be on the market in the future, keeping the prices lower (but still higher than now).
Diagon Alley is a solid Investment. Great colors, great parts, lots of special pieces. Overall just a great set. I expect DA to be the next "Cafe Corner" to be honest.

I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.
Re: Toys R Us (USA) Buy 1 Get 1 50% Off 11/25-12/1
I been buying and selling Lego's on Ebay for 8 years, I only buy the big sets. One key to making money is you have to get them as cheap as you can, and the main thing is you have to hold on to them, usually a year or two after they are discontinued the prices are usually high. Examples the Jabba Sail barge I had 50 of them, The Star Destroyer the AT AT and Falcon 5-6 years ago, and the AT AT 8129 set, Toys R US had them a few times for $83 and a few other good sales, and The First and Second Republic Gunship, The 8098 Turbo Tank, I got 72 of them, in another year $200 or more and since I got them all for $85 or lower. And The Falcon thats out now got 58 of them Paid $90 or less each, and when these are over this will be a $250 or more set, and the next big Falcon you won't see for a few years. "The Only Set that has not going anywhere fast is the star wars 7754 Calamari Star Cruiser, I have 12 and paid $50 each. And on thos 20212 Imperial Shuttle I have 52 of them, they are discontinued so these will rise pretty fast by next year, I also have 54 Black Pearls $55 each at Costco last year, 48 Queens Revenge 4195 set. The Pearl and Revenge will be pretty big bucks, Harry Potter 20 Castle's, 48 Alley 10217, 2 more big buck sets. When Toys r us had those Ninjago 2507 Temple for $92 I went aroind and getting 33, Aslo have 40 Jabba's Palace, and 10 Star wars Dropship, 15 10198 Tantive, Some Firehouse's, Tower Bridge, 10 Troll Fortress and more. THe Point is if you want to invest stick with star wars big sets, Lord of the Rings Helm's, And The Falcon, Ninjago 2 big sets, Vampires Castle. And once they are done with the Death Star, people panic and and everybody buys them up, and then the price rises, "I Think the 2 sets to get, since the Haunted House just came and the New Batman Ayslum $150 Janury, these 2 will be real big buck sets once they are not made anymore, which is 3 years. So all the times Amazon or whoever had the Death Star cheap I try and get a few, as I have 25 Death Stars, and 10 Super Star Destroyer's. I am not bragging about spending ton's of money on lego's, but if you no what to buy and hold on to them, "Which most people can't do, most people can't wait a few years." Now if you guys don't believe me let me no and I will put a few pictures up. ED

The LEGO sets I bought as an investment.
^ @emazers: a rhetorical question: where the heck do you store all this?
You must have some high overhead costs to store all these large sets for 2-3 years.

wow. good for you. I've contemplated 'going big' on lego reselling, but just dont have the space for it.emazers wrote:I have some in a spare bedroom, and 2 other rooms,
No need, really. Although, a few years back, one of the big sellers on Bricklink (mnemeth/Troy, I think) posted pics of his new 'barn/warehouse'. It was a sight to behold.emazers wrote:I will post a few pictures soon.

Re: Toys R Us (USA) Buy 1 Get 1 50% Off 11/25-12/1
I view myself primarily as a Hard-Core Collector... I have more bricks in my collection than I have for re-sale... I originally started just collecting, but ran into clearance for like 70% off... how could you not buy and keep for parts if not resell to make your collection cheaper/free if possible? I think this happens to a lot of collectors who have higher Lego budgets (or who put it at 0% interest when the deals occur and pay it off before its up lol).
Over the course of my re-emergence I've picked up extra sets for sale/trade to essentially recover costs for my collection / trade to enhance it. At first, I grabbed whatever I could at 50%+ usually... after a while, I've seen little interest in some of the sets I started purchasing without real thought (Atlantis, PoP, etc.) Fortunately I've also grabbed a few goodies like SW BPs, some IJ Cairos. I've also invested in CMF as I've loved them myself, and Minifigs usually have the best resale value.
Over the course of my short period of sales, I've mainly sold CMF, while the sets mainly sit waiting.. My point is that as you grow in collecting, sometimes it branches into investing... and then that further splits based on your own views. I think emazers has just evolved in the 8 years he's been doing this getting better and more profitiable over time. The small sets are nice, but at best you make $10-20 / set.... and you really don't sell them at the price you'd like as fast as you want. With Bigger sets (my 1 set purchase was 5 medium sized sets, all others were CMF or polybags), you get a much pay back with the same amount invested, and less sales. The real value of multiple sets is the ability to break them down for parts / minifigs if they aren't moving... with bigger sets you can't really do that as well unless the Minifigs are selling for lots.
If you're Investing say $5k into Lego / year... and in 2 years you get a 50% return... think about how quickly that snowballs your investment pool, which allows you to purchase multiple large sets like he's doing without really investing much of his own budget anymore (if he chooses). You quickly won't even need to invest your own money since you will only need to sell a relatively few sets to recover your initial Investment then the rest is the money that seeds multiple other large sets.
I say Bravo, and I would love any tips... Pictures would be great. I wish I would have known to Invest in large sets / very popular only sets...I wouldn't have such "wasted" space in my Lego room.

Re: Toys R Us (USA) Buy 1 Get 1 50% Off 11/25-12/1
If lego were limited edition or something, then complaints about resellers would be valid, but everyone has years and years to buy the sets they want, so complaints about someone "buying them all to resell" holds no weight. The same with people stocking up during sales, everyone has a chance to buy them, many many times throughout the year half a dozen retailers discount items, you snooze, you lose, especially when you snooze multiple times.
reselling to finance your own collection? Rock on.

The argument about "buying them all" does hold weight when it centers around it affecting others. Like in the (purely speculative) case of TRU restricting sales on things like the modulars because people have abused the hell out of BOGOs. Also when items marked down to a really cool level (like Shelob was $6 recently) and are gobbled up by stockpilers, leaving the parent who just wanted a good price on a set for his kid out in the cold.popnfresh wrote:If lego were limited edition or something, then complaints about resellers would be valid, but everyone has years and years to buy the sets they want, so complaints about someone "buying them all to resell" holds no weight. Yes, you snooze you lose, but that doesn't mean we have to completely separate our humanity from the concept.

I hope to God you have all that insured. That's amazing.

Good point, homeowner's insurance only covers up to a limited amount of "personal items" and sometimes excludes any items of a rare, collectible or business nature, which these would likely be considered. I hope you don't smoke, or live near too-nosy neighbors.Edmond Dantes wrote:I hope to God you have all that insured. That's amazing.
